Watching TV increases food disorders in teenagers
The recent arrival of television in Fiji (1995) provided a unique opportunity to measure its impact on people's behaviour and perceptions. The news was not good. Teenage girls who watched Fiji's one channel (broadcasting mainly US, Australian and British programmes) were 50% more likely to see themselves as fat and 30% more likely to diet! Symptoms of eating disorders have increased fivefold.
