As fish stocks are wiped out by over-fishing and dolphins endangered
by the French pursuit of winter bass, ethical consumers want to
know what they can eat. Now they can check out the Marine Conservation
Society's Good Fish Guide.
The issue is more complex than which fish toeat or not, usually
being more about where they are caught and whether they
come from sustainably managed stocks. Cod from the exhausted waters
of the Atlantic and North Sea, for example, are to be avoided
whilst cod from Icelandic waters are fine. Fish and chip aficionados
can relax. Most of the UK's cod is Icelandic.
The guide covers the 60 most common fish on sale in the UK as
well as listing the 20 most vulnerable. The Good Fish Guide is
available from: The Marine Conservation Society, 9 Gloucester
Road, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 5BU Tel.: 01989 566017.
