Call it what you will - the 'green revolution',
'factory farming', 'chemical farming' - the way we farm in the more
industrially developed countries is depleting and contaminating
the soil, and so the crops grown on it, and so the animals that
feed on those crops. Vast amounts of chemical fertilisers are sprayed
onto the soil in an attempt to put the minerals back, and vast amounts
of chemical pesticides are sprayed onto the crops in an attempt
to protect them from pests (see 'Pesticides').
This leaves toxic residues on the vegetables, grains and fruit,
rendering them ever less nutritious. Finally, unnecessary and unnatural
genetic modification of crops followed by (sometimes deliberate)
contamination of natural crops with genetically-modified (GM) crops,
