Low levels of vitamin D were linked to poor brain function, according
to a long study of older people attending a university’s
‘Cognitive Problems’ clinic.
The study compared their blood levels of vitamins B12 and D3
with the results of 'mini-mental state examination’ (MMSE)
tests.* It found a strong correlation between low vitamin D3 and
poor MMSE results, but no correlation between MMSE results and
B12 levels.
* a widely accepted measure of a person’s orientation (awareness
of time/day/season), registration (names of objects, recollection
of objects), attention, ability to calculate, and language/ communication
skills
